Welcome!
You're probably here because you are a parent or a teacher. To me, all parents are teachers and we each have a challenging job no matter how we approach it. Whether we work outside the home or in the home; whether we dedicate our lives to managing our households or enlist the help of school teachers in educating our children; we are the parents. Public school, private school, homeschool, or un-school; at the end of the day we are the ones responsible for our children's future.
With the recent growing disappointment in public policy regarding education, it's time we come together for the good of the children. There is something my family and I can bring to the table to benefit your family, as I know there is something yours can contribute to mine. I appreciate you taking time to join the conversation. Your investment into your child's education is an investment into my child's future, so thank you!
It's time we let go of outdated beliefs held for so long regarding education and embrace a new, open-minded, modern approach. Let's make 2015 a year to enjoy learning again.

Who we are
We are the Walters family. God first, marriage next, then the kids.
I'm Debra, the voice of the blog. I may go back and forth from "I" to "We" because while I am the writer, my husband and I are undoubtedly a team. We are both passionate about raising these three gifts we've been given.
I've been passionate about learning from an early age. I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I was in the 3rd grade, back before the 3rd grade was hijacked by standardized testing. In 2005, I graduated from the University of Florida with a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelors in Special Education. I worked as a Kindergarten teacher at a local low-income public school before becoming a mommy and deciding to teach at home.
The combination of my experience as a public school teacher together with my current experience as a homeschool mom of three kids under 7 has given me a whole new perspective on children and learning. That's the perspective from which I approach all I do in my home and share on this blog.

Our Philosophy of Education
- Learning is as natural as life.
- The best way to learn is by living.
- There is something to be learned everywhere. The world is our classroom. #theworldisourclassroom
- Love and learning go hand in hand. Love of the subject, love of the teacher, and the student feeling loved.
- Everything must be purpose-driven! We are more inclined to learn something if it matters to us personally. #purposedrivenlearning
- It is just as important to be teachable as it is to be smart.
- There is a greater purpose for learning than passing tests. The pride of being an educated individual and having understanding should surpass the pride of having a high score on a test.
- Our goal is for our children to value themselves intrinsically, rather than comparatively.
- The most important social relationships in early childhood years are within the family.
- Children learn best when they are happy and healthy. Kids need discipline to be happy.
- These formative years are more about developing our children's character than filling their minds with random information.
- Kids need a strong foundation for learning which can be built by allowing them to experience learning as a positive and engaging activity led by their own personal interests.
